Six modules covering everyday banking in Canada

Money Academy

Each module teaches one area of daily banking in plain language, with Canadian examples. Start with any of them; together they form a complete picture of cash, cards, apps and safety.

Modules

What each module teaches and how you practise it

Every module combines short written lessons with a practical activity drawn from everyday Canadian life. You will read, try a realistic task and check your understanding. No module promises a certificate; the outcome is skill you can use the same day.

  1. 01

    Understanding ATMs and Cash Access

You learn how ATMs read a card and PIN, what surcharges and network fees can apply, and how to withdraw and deposit cash safely. The activity has you read a sample receipt and spot where a fee was added, then practise shielding your PIN.

  2. 02

    Digital Banking for Beginners

This module takes you through setting up online banking and a mobile app, then sending an e-transfer and reading a monthly statement. You practise adjusting alerts so you hear about activity that matters, and learn what each notification means.

  3. 03

    Credit and Debit Cards Explained

You compare how debit and credit work, then see how interest, limits and minimum payments behave over a month. The activity is reading a sample card statement line by line, plus a walk through chip-and-PIN and tap payments.

  4. 04

    Online Banking Security

Here you build safe habits: choosing and storing passwords, turning on two-step verification and tightening phone and computer settings. The activity is a personal checklist you complete for your own accounts, one setting at a time.

  5. 05

    Everyday Money Management

You draft a monthly budget from your real income and bills, track spending for a few weeks and set up a simple savings routine. Marc's approach keeps plans realistic, so the activity is a one-page budget that fits your life.

  6. 06

    Financial Scam Awareness

You learn the signs of phishing emails, phone calls and text scams, and what to do if something looks wrong. The activity has you assess sample messages, decide how to respond and list who to contact if you have been targeted.

Before you begin

What you need to take these modules

There are no exams to pass first and no special background required. A few simple things make studying smoother, and most learners already have them at home.

  • No prior knowledge

Every module starts from the basics and defines its terms. You do not need to have used online banking or understand fees beforehand.

  • A device with internet

A computer, tablet or smartphone with a stable connection is enough. Lessons are text-based and do not require special software.

  • Time at your own pace

Set aside short, regular sessions that suit your week. There are no deadlines, so you can pause and return when it is convenient.

  • A recent statement to hand

Having a past bank or card statement nearby helps you apply lessons to real figures. You may also use the samples we provide.

  • Willingness to ask questions

If something is unclear, write down your question. You can send it through the contact page and we will answer plainly.

  • A trusted person, if helpful

Some learners study alongside a friend or family member for company. It is optional, and the material works well on your own.

  • A notebook for notes

Jotting down settings you changed and points to revisit helps lessons stick. A paper notebook or a simple digital note both work.

  • Patience with yourself

Banking has its own vocabulary, and nobody learns it overnight. Repeating a lesson is normal and part of how the courses are designed.

Questions to ask yourself before choosing a module

Picking a first module is easier with a few honest questions. Which task makes you hesitate most, withdrawing cash, sending money, reading a statement or judging a message? Do you want to feel safer, or to understand fees better? Laura, Amrit and Marc teach different modules, so the answers point to a natural starting place. If you are still unsure, write to us from the contact page and describe your situation. We read every message and reply in plain language.
